COMPACT A MULTIMEDIA PROJEKT by Bernhard Moosbauer aka exsample Pechakucha-lecture Compact/idea Compact is an expandable system in multimedia. it-s based on a series of sampled loop-collections on 12-inch-vinyl-records which are used as modular tools for different kinds of projects. Most important aspects of the work: - collage/sequencing: this method has a long history in the classical arts. it means to take a part of a context and combine it with others in order to produce new stuff - sampling: sampling is a term for quoting from music-history - loop: a very old method used for producing dancemusic - open source: compact is material which can be taken, transformed and changed in different ways. the compact-records can be purchased in dj-recordstores worldwide and can be combined with other endlessloop-records in order to create new songs, projects, dj-bands, etc Compact/tools Compact is a series of 12-inch-vinyl-records based on endlessloops, which are 1,8-second soundpieces in lengh. They repeat as often as the dj intends. The loops on compact/tool are either out of my autobiographic context (my favorite record etc.) or edited by other artists (i like). The Compact-vinyl-series is planned from side A to Z. On each side are 50 x 1,8 seconds-sounds. This micro-units can be used as a modular repertoire for Soundartists / Djs. Therefore Compact-series, mixer and turntables can be seen as an instrument. Compact/tools so far: - compact 1 was a preprint-version (cd-collection). - compact 2_standards (3-vinyl-set 6x50 loops, edition: 500): the essence of my private record-collection partitioned in soundcharacters - compact 3_fieber (1-vinyl; 2x50 loops, edition: 500): sounds from a record of a polish elvis-imitator - compact 4_sodah (1-vinyl; 2x50 loops, edition: 500): sounds from a recored for super-8--horror--movies - compact 5_phon.os sortcuts (1-vinyl; 2x50 loops, edition: 500): sounds made by a berlin sound-artist phon.o - compact 6_toolbox (1-vinyl; 2x50 loops, edition: 500): the live-tool of the dj-band the barebackshow Compact/projects Compact/installation For this project, I produced a special furniture-system combined with a series of video-loops, which can be adopted flexible to each room-space-situation. The visual system is based on the colors red, green, blue and the shapes circle, square and triangle. The installation is public. That means every visitor can change the sound of the installation. Also the interieur can be used for club-events. The barebackshow Together with Berlin based Dj phon.o (shitkatapult) I am doing a Dj-band-project. So, it-s two djs who are organising the Compact-micro-pieces to a big ambient, dubby, dancy or techno-live-composition. This session combines different Dj-ideas and it is similar to a jazz-session. The barebackshow has got it-s own visual-set for live-events. To continue the proceedings, we sometimes play with additional djs. Compact/box Compact is compact. Therefore the next step to do was to develop an All-in-one-module for playing the Compact/loops. This sound-sculpture is a team-project of an interial designer, a sound ingeneer and me for developing concept and sound. The Compact / box is designed for combining more modules which can be put up in galleries or clubs. Every box contains a record player on top of the module, a 2-way-speaker-system (mono, 360 degree sound) and an amplifier at the bottom. Additional wheels make the module portable.
